Professor Ortega Sánchez holds three doctoral degrees, namely a PhD in Didactics of the Social Sciences from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, a PhD in Education from the University of Burgos, and a PhD in Early Modern History of the Americas from the University of Extremadura. In all three cases, he was awarded the Extraordinary Doctoral Prize. His research has focused primarily on education for democratic citizenship in social science teaching and literary education, transdisciplinary and integrated education, the pedagogical use of educational technology, and research methods in education. Within this latter field, he has led the validation of the psychometric properties of pioneering measurement instruments in the teaching of Social Sciences (Geography and History) and Literature in the Ibero American context. At the University of Burgos, he is Director of Consolidated Research Unit UIC 285 (Integrated Teaching and Interdisciplinarity) and Academic Lead of the Recognised Research Group in Didactics of History and the Social Sciences (DHISO). His research and teaching career has also been closely connected with his role as Director of the Teaching Innovation Group in Didactics of the Social Sciences, Languages and Literatures in Initial Teacher Education (DiCSOL). He has been nominated among the ten leading researchers worldwide in Social Sciences (Education) in the 7th edition of the USERN Awards (Universal Scientific Education and Research Network). He has also received the First Prize in Transformative Education Research 2025, awarded by the Global Citizenship Foundation in collaboration with UNESCO MGIEP, and the Award for Excellence in Science and Innovation at the HOPI Excellence Awards 2026.
